1983 – The Under Dogs Lifts the World Cup Again !

Just like the 1983 world cup which saw the under dogs India lifting the Cup. The movie 1983 also clinches the trophy for a clean-entertainment film of recent times. There were very less sport based movies in Malayalam movie industry and very few was successful in entertaining people. The year 1983 was a landmark year for sports in India similarly the new Malayalam movie 1983, could be landmark in the movie history.

The movie 1983 gives you the kick of an action packed twenty – 20 world cup final match which was won on the last over by hitting a huge six. 1983 is romantic movie set in a village where a group of youngsters who are united by their passion for cricket. If you didn’t know that Abrid Shine is a new comer and this is his maiden endeavor, you will be surprised to know this after watching 1983, it has the signatures of brilliant a craftsmen. Abrid Shine’s experiences as a photographer must have helped in that beautiful frames you see throughout this visual treat.

In three words the movie 1983 talks about Cricket, Friendship and Love, but the way the movie is taken makes all the difference and makes it an wholesome entertainment. After back to back hits Nivin Pauly is essaying the lead role in 1983 along with Anoop Menon .Nivin Pauly did a wonderful job and he proved that he is a successful young hero of malayalam film industry . This one is going to be the break , Anoop Menon was expecting since a long time, he has succeeded in coming out of his self imposed Super star syndrome.

Movie starts when India was at the peak of the world when Kapil’ s devils won the world cup for India for the first time. The story revolves around the personal and professional life of a cricketer, Rameshan (Nivin Pauly) and his memories from 1983 to the present including his affair with Manjula (Nikki Galrani). His ups and downs in life and career, and his wish to see someone else achieve what he couldn’t due to circumstance.

For cricket fans of Kerala, a respectful movie on cricket was long due. I assure that this movie is going to be a visual treat for all those cricket lovers out there! It has a brilliantly drawn first half in the backdrop of cricket which is intertwined with school time romances and first crushes. Script writers have sewn comedy into the script so naturally to the level that it can be exemplified as natural situational comedy. Jacob Gregory has consolidated his position in the industry through his witty acting.

In the second half, the director has taken us to a different level maintaining the fun delivered in the first half of the movie and Abrid, as debutante director is worth giving an ovation for the efforts put up to show a romantic cricket match. Throughout the movie we never feel that we are watching the debut of a director and producer.

Every single actor of this movie has a crucial role and most of them have done justice to their respective roles. Saiju Kurup, Joy Mathew, Sanju, Joju, Srindha Ashab all has given good performances. The teamwork they had put into this one will not go in vain. We are unable to decide what is the best aspect of the movie, whether it is the story line, comedy, cinematography or music?

Everyone was expecting the music to be good since the lovely nostalgic song ‘Olonjali Kurvi…’ by Jayachandran and Vani Jayaram under the direction of Gopi Sunder, and viewers’ expectations were met. From a critical perspective, we would say that the art direction could have been improved with more props while showing the 80′s.

1983 is capable of creating a space for a new-genre of movies in Malayalam- the-comedy romantic-sports-drama similar to what Jerry Maguire did in 1996 to Hollywood. Congrats for TR Shamsudeen, the producer and Lal Jose for picking a winning horse and presenting us an awesome clean-family entertainment movie experience.
